Healthcare in Hospitals

The nature of hospitals as organizations have been diverse and varied in India. Nursing homes, small private hospitals as well as multi speciality tertiary care hospitals have emerged in large numbers over the last few years. However there is an absence of homogeneity in their functioning or regulation. This can be brought about by way of enhanced governance, as training and development of the health care managers can play a crucial role in setting the background for this change. With this focus and challenge in mind the Center for Health Management Studies and Research has been set up at the Bharati Vidyapeeth University - Pune

Objectives of the center

• To create a Center of Excellence in Health Education Research and Consultancy

• To implement training of hospital managers and public health managers and to develop their capacity to contribute in policy making and reform in the health care sector of India.

• To conduct courses for in-service personnel in the health care delivery system in the private and public sector.

• To conduct locale specific research and find sustainable solutions for long term development of health problems and issues in health management.

• To participate in health policy development and reform in order to share expertise and create a knowledge base for governance in health care.

• To offer consultancies as part of knowledge sharing and help health care organizations and health care development projects to plan their initiatives and strengthen implementation.

• To develop forums for sensitization towards the health care needs of the low socio economic communities of India and initiate momentum to stabilize and enhance their health care conditions.

• To focus attention on the specific health care needs of India's growing urban centres and for the accessible rural sectors and remote wilderness tracts.

• To develop and disseminate materials to enhance awareness on specific health issues in the public domain.

Objectives of the teaching program

• To provide a knowledge base for individuals who are interested in health care and management of health care institutions

• To create a knowledge sharing tool for interdisciplinary learning amongst various faculties involved in hospital management

• To facilitate the development of managers and doctors into hospital administrators through an executive learning program

• To allow for development of specialized vocational training in the field of hospital management

• To upgrade the existing capacity and skill set of professionals and provide them with new learning opportunities

• To create learning program which draw and disseminate information from the best practices in health care

MASTERS IN HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION

The master in hospital administration is aimed towards orienting and developing students for executive positions in hospitals. The course develops the managerial skills of individuals and also exposes them to clinical aspects of hospital management. The students have the option of developing their skill set in a particular area of hospital management while taking the optional modules.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course students should be able to perform the following functions:-

• Students should be able to analyse and assess various situations in the hospital

• Students should be able to plan and organize developmental policies and implement strategies

• Students should be able to participate in management decisions and convert them into action plans

• Students should be able to work in teams and help in team building across different faculties and departments in the hospital

POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT (EXECUTIVE PROGRAM)

The executive program in Hospital Management is for individuals seeking to enhance their management as well as clinical skills and apply them for hospital management. The 1 yr course is an intensive learning program with comprehensive content, which is meant to leverage the individuals' existing knowledge and capacity and fill the gaps. Individuals from a management background will be taught clinical aspects of hospital management while those from a clinical background will be inducted and trained in management practices

Course Objectives

On completion of the Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management course, students should be able perform the following:-

• Students should be able to take on key managerial responsibilities in the hospital

• Students should be able to create reporting systems, working teams and build coordination between them and the upper management

• Students should be able act as linkages between clinicians, managers, staff and the board and translate all their working needs into a hospital working policy

• Students should be able to develop strategies for business development and quality improvement and transfer them to the grass root level in the hospital

• Students should be able to act as effective leaders to their teams and departments while working with other leaders and supporting organizational goals
