This institute focuses its activities on education, training and research in the emerging important areas of information technology and biotechnology. The Institute conducts a full fledged degree programme of B.Sc. (Biotechnology 3 year) and M.Sc. (Biotechnology, a 4 semester programme of 2 years.) The Institute runs an Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics of 1 year comprising of 2 semesters. The major departments include : Biochemical Sciences, Microbial Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Cell and Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. One of the major programs of the Institute is to work to increase the computer literacy among the people to enable them to make use of computer and information technology in the course of their professional activities. It runs a few applied short term courses in Information Technology. The Institute is housed in a five storey building in an area of 55000 sq.ft. housing the five departments. There is a well equipped digital library with more than 1000 books and 09 journals. So far as biotechnology is concerned, the Institute’s activities are centered mainly around research in those areas which are relevant to the middle level peasants in their agricultural production activities. The future plans of the institute include development of collaborative projects with hospitals and diagnostic centers for developing specialized molecular diagnostic tests like HPV typing, triple antigen test, cytogenetics using FISH or comparative genomic hybridization. Also to develop collaborative projects such as production of monoclonal antibodies, or other cell products with biotech industry and to perform studies on anticancer properties of plant extracts of Nothyapodyles numoniana. The institute has established collaboration with the department of Pathology, oral pathology and Departmnt of Gynecology of Bharati Hospital. The institute includes highly qualified and experienced faculty, well-equipped, biochemical Sciences, Microbial Biotechnology, animal cell culturing plant tissue cultue, and regeneration as well as recombinant DNA technology laboratories.
