Overview

Established in 1978, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University’s New Law College is one of the premier institutes of international excellence in the field of legal education. The college has been consistently ranked amongst the top ten law colleges in India on the criteria of curriculum, teaching staff, course, research, facilities and placement.

It has recently received the distinction of being ranked 3rd amongst Top Private Law Colleges by India Today - MDRA Survey of best Law Colleges, 2021.

Inauguration

The college was inaugurated by former Chief Justice of India Hon. Mr. Justice Y.V. Chandrachud in 1978 and in 2003, proudly celebrated its silver jubilee. The foundation stone for the New Law College building was laid in 2004 by former Chief Justice of India Hon. Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and in 2005, former Chief Justice of India Hon. Mr. Justice R.C. Lahoti inaugurated the new building of the law college.

As a constituent unit of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, the college is recognized by the Bar Council of India & University Grant Commission. The college is also recognized under 2f & 12b of the UGC Act 1956. BVDU’s New Law College has been re-accredited with an ‘A+’ Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (3rd Cycle).

New Law College, Pune has highly qualified and competent faculty members with years of experience. The faculty includes renowned academicians, senior lawyers, retired judges, corporate professionals, solicitors. The faculty members also actively participate in national and international conferences.

What does the College Offer?

All the Programmes offered by the college are recognized and approved by the Bar Council of India and the University Grant Commission.

Students can apply for quality legal education at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels i.e., LLB (3 Years), BBA LLB (5 years), BA LLB (5 Years), LLM (Trimester & 2 year Course) and Ph.D. in Law. Besides the regular courses, the college also offers various diploma and certificate courses in the areas of specialization in Labour Laws, Taxation Laws, Arbitration Laws, Human Rights, Intellectual Property Rights, Cyber Laws and Corporate Laws.

The college has also introduced innovative programmes in interdisciplinary courses and paralegal courses in the form of BBA (Law), Expertise in Commercial Drafting, Insurance Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Art of Advocacy, etc.

Distance education learning mode programmes in Law at diploma levels are also available. The special features of distance education learning at the New Law College include guidance by qualified and expert faculty, regular coaching through contact class, quality study material, promotion of research, E-Learning through video conferencing & collaborative programmes through association with renowned institutions in the country and abroad.

The New Law College is well-known for its collaborations with renowned universities in the UK and USA through international moot court competitions participation, student recommendations for LLM courses abroad and transfer of faculty to deliver legal discourses. The college is also associated with Oxford University, University of Sussex, The Law Society of England & Wales, King’s College, London, John Marshall Law School, Chicago, USA DePaul University, University of Reading, University of Westminster, and Birmingham University. There are also discussions for future collaborations with Kingston University, UK.

Practical Training/Conferences
  • Students are offered practical training (courtroom teaching) through Moot Courts, Legal Aid Programmes, educational visits and pro-bono internships. The programmes are designed to give exposure to the students regarding the different aspects of legal work and procedures in the chambers of Lawyers, Courts, Lok Adalats, Administrative Offices, Legal Aid Centres, Legal Literacy Camps and more.
  • Judicial Colloquia is an event conducted by the college, in which eminent jurists, judges and lawyers of the Supreme Court and High Courts deliver legal discourses and interact with the law students. More than 175 judges from Supreme Court and High Courts have visited New Law College at Judicial Colloquia since its inception in 2000.
  • Justice P N Bhagwati International Moot court competition on Criminal Law is also held annually, where more than 14 international teams from Europe, the US, Asia and Africa as well as nearly 40 teams from top law schools in India participate.

Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition

Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition is an annual international competition held by the New Law College, which discusses human rights across the globe. Hon. Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, former Union Minister for Law & Justice, in the presence of Hon. Mr. Justice P.N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India, inaugurated the competition in 2011.

  • Justice P.N. Bhagwati 4th Moot Court Competition Edition – Inaugurated by Hon. Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, former Union Minister for Law and Justice, in the presence of Hon. Mr. Justice P.N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice P.N. Bhagwati 5th International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights 2nd Edition - Inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
  • Justice P.N. Bhagwati 6th International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights 3rd Edition – Attended by Hon. Mr. Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Hon. Mr. Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Judge, Supreme Court of India.
  • Justice P.N. Bhagwati 2nd International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights 4th Edition – Graced by Hon. Mr. Justice Shiva Kirti Singh, Judge, Supreme Court of India and the prizes were distributed by Hon. Mr. Justice N.V. Ramana, Judge, Supreme Court of India.
  • Justice P.N. Bhagwati 2nd International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights 5th Edition - Inaugurated by Hon. Mr. Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India.

Common Facilities Offered

Students can access various facilities in the college after admissions. The state-of-the-art infrastructure of the college includes the spacious seven-storied independent building with a huge auditorium, a separate Moot Court Room, Human Rights Cell, Cyber Cell, Women Empowerment Cell, Legal Aid Cell, Placement Cell, and Foreign Student Cell

The college library is equipped with books necessary for the students during their years of education. Students will be able to access classics as well as recent books on law and the legal systems. The library also has an extensive online database that includes resources from SCC Online, Manupatra, West Law, and Lexis-Nexis. Back volumes of reputed law journals, law reports, and reference books include:

  • All England Law Reports
  • United States Supreme Courts Reports (136 volumes)
  • Corpus Juris Secundum (150 volumes).

The library also provides free internet facilities to the students through the Cyber Cell. The college also publishes a quarterly Law Journal ‘Bharati Law Review’.
