Overview

According to Technopak Advisors in their report 'India Healthcare Trends 2008, the Healthcare industry is emerging as one of the promising sectors in the economy and is expected to reach over US$ 150 billion by 2017. Currently, existing healthcare organizations are expanding by opening hospitals in new service areas and new organizations are steadily entering with state-of-the-art equipment, latest technology and marketing strategies.

As per Price Water house Coopers 'Healthcare in India: Emerging market report', the revenues from the healthcare sector account for 5.2 per cent of the GDP, making it the third-largest growth segment in India. Therefore, India is also eyeing the global healthcare market to emerge as one of the possible destinations for international patients.

However, India needs to add 2 million beds to the existing 1.1 million by 2027 and requires immediate investments of US$ 82 billion. Due to the explosion of technology, managers are now required to have new skill sets that are accompanied by the knowledge of traditional healthcare organizations. Until recently, doctors without any professional management training were supervising and governing the hospitals and health care systems. This was increasingly making it difficult for the doctors to devote sufficient time to their patients. The institutes and the government have felt the need for professional managers specifically trained for the management of hospitals and other healthcare institutions. However, there is a wide gap between supply and demand for trained healthcare managers/administrators in these sectors. Hence, the requirement for courses in Hospital and Health Care Administration has now become a priority.
