About Department

The department comprises a basic field of knowledge to be correlated with clinical application where the students get to learn basic sciences that forms the basis of all clinical sciences. By getting a precise update of basic physiology and its pathology, students acquire good dental education.

At the dental anatomy laboratory, students develop carving skills of different teeth and with the aid of models, charts, able guidance and demonstration from the staff, they acquire perfectionism and precision. A separate hall is there where the oral histology and oral pathology practicals are conducted and it is here that knowledge about different structures-both at gross and cellular level –in health and disease is imparted.

The histopathology laboratory has a setup for basic investigative pathology which includes:

Aspiration biopsies
Exfoliative cytology
Biopsies
Differential staining
Microbial staining etc

The Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology has all the latest available equipment and this will prove advantageous for the research projects that are undertaken by the PG students of our college and hospital. The department has the backing of a postgraduate clinic which has dental chairs, a histopathology and haematology laboratory.

Histopathological Examination – Histopathological examination is considered as the Gold Standard for the Final Diagnosis of various diseases affecting the oral cavity. The Department provides diagnosis of oral lesions and specializes in the diagnosis of oral pre-cancer and cancer at an early stage.

Research microscope - The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology has an Advanced Research Microscope. This new CX43 microscope has various fields - the bright field (which is the routine), phase contrast, dark ground and polarizing attachments which are all inbuilt. This microscope has a computer with image analysis software and the images can further be projected through a CCTV attachment. This can be used for undergraduates as well as post graduates, where discussion and explanation will be easier.

Hematology Laboratory – The Department has a fully automated Hematology Three Part Analyzer for carrying out the hematological investigations like the Hemogram, Blood sugar level, Prothrombin Time etc..In future advanced procedures with Biochemical Analyzer for critical investigations will be made available.

Various cases of mucosal lesions, soft and hard tissue swellings, and oral manifestations of systemic diseases, oral infections, white lesions, oral premalignancies and malignancies are reviewed after which confirmed diagnosis is done and accordingly the line of treatment is followed. It is here that a multidisciplinary approach is applied with the department of Oral Diagnosis and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery so that the best possible treatment is given to the patient.
