About Department

Established in 1990, the Department of Paediatrics, BVDUMC, is a well-known teaching centre that offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Paediatrics as well as post-doctoral training in various paediatric subspecialties.

It serves as a tertiary referral centre that is committed to catering to the health needs of newborns and adolescents. It drains a large volume of patients from the city of Pune, peripheries, and all corners of Maharashtra. The department runs postgraduate programmes (MD, DCH) and also offers various post-doctoral fellowships in Neonatology, Paediatric Epilepsy, and Paediatric Endocrinology. Apart from the clinical services and teaching, it nurtures a growing Research Cell.

Best practices

The establishment of the ‘Paediatric Clinical Research Unit’ has been considered as one of the best practices of our department.

To sensitize and encourage faculty to conduct research, the department of Paediatrics has established a clinical research unit that conducts clinical research as per standard norms. This unit consists of a dedicated full-time team of faculty and ancillary support staff for conducting research.

The unit has conducted over 25 vaccine trials of various phases i.e. phase II/ III/ IV, and surveillance for Influenza, Pneumococcal Invasive Disease, and Rotavirus Gastroenteritis. It has received grants from renowned national and international organizations such as the WHO, CMC Vellore, and many pharmaceutical companies.

The unit has been audited by many sponsors and has been inspected by the Drug Controller Government of India office and granted approval. This has helped generate many publications in index journals nationally and internationally through these projects. They have also helped to pave the way for introducing many low-cost vaccines of national importance.

Awards & Achievements

Our faculty members and students have earned several fellowships and awards for their outstanding contributions to academia and research. The students have also won prizes in non-academic competitions.

  • The medical faculty members from our department have been awarded fellowships by national and international forums for exemplary work in their respective fields. They have been invited as experts and resource persons for various knowledge events and serve as lead members of national/international paediatric committees. They have also been a part of various committees of many paediatric sub-chapter for formulating consensus guidelines.
  • The postgraduates, fellows, and faculty members have also received prizes for papers and posters in national conferences.
  • Our undergraduate quiz teams reached the finals and bagged the runners-up prize in the national level IAP Undergraduate Paediatric Quiz.

Teaching and Learning

As a teaching unit, our thrust is to impart quality education and produce efficient, compassionate, and confident graduates and paediatricians empowered with skills and knowledge. Large patient volume, super-specialty exposure, experienced faculty, structured teaching program, ample research opportunities coupled with an excellent teaching infrastructure make our department an ideal ground for teaching-learning.

Our training programmes include

  • UG training programme in Paediatrics - UG Paediatric Curriculum is based on achieving core competencies in Paediatrics.
  • PG training programme in Paediatrics (MD Paediatrics, Programme duration - 3 years) - PG trainees get adequate clinical exposure to treat a variety of paediatric illnesses in outdoor patient department setups, indoor wards, and Paediatric/Neonatal ICU and get a unique opportunity to work in various subspecialties.
  • Postdoctoral training programmes in Paediatric subspecialties - We offer paediatric subspecialty fellowship programs in Neonatology, Epilepsy & Neurology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Paediatric Intensive Care, Hemato-oncology, Developmental Paediatrics, Infectious diseases, Rheumatology, Pulmonology, Genetics, and Metabolic disorders.
  • A doctoral program in Neonatology (DM neonatology)

All medical faculty of our department have undertaken the MET (medical education technology) training, curriculum implementation workshops, and various other training workshops and modules from time to time.

More than two hundred students (postgraduates and post-doctoral fellows) have completed their training and are well placed across the country and overseas.

With an intention to spread and exchange knowledge, our department has successfully conducted and hosted many knowledge events including national level conferences.

In addition to formal training, the department is actively involved in outreach training activities for private paediatricians, general practitioners, nurses, Asha workers, Aanganwadi Workers, health workers, teachers, and parents in the necessary pediatric care skills and advances.

Patient Care

As a department, we are committed to in enhancing, and empowering the lives of children and their families by focussing on quality health care to our patients from birth till adolescence. We offer a complete range of services -General, Speciality care, and Critical care in Paediatrics at an affordable cost.

Our upgraded pediatric OPD located on the ground floor offers all Pediatric and allied services under one roof adding to patient comfort. A child-friendly 120 bedded Pediatric Ward and a 12 bedded, well-equipped Pediatric Critical Care subchapter accredited PICU are located on the third floor. A dedicated Haemato-oncology indoor unit is placed on the fourth floor. We are proud to be a part of a 60 bedded NICU accredited for level II care by the National Neonatology Forum which happens to be the largest NICU in Pune and western Maharashtra. All the above clinical services are backed up with excellent retrieval services.

Extension Activities

As our social responsibility, we strive to promote community health by imparting health education to the grassroots level and delivering health care to the doorsteps of the community. We have been achieving this through our following extension activities

  • Conducting Rural Paediatric satellite OPDS
  • Organising preventive health check-up camps
  • Celebrating health days and active participation in National health programs
  • Imparting Health Education to health workers, teachers, and parents through health talks, training and newspaper articles
