Department of Management Studies (Off Campus) Organises a Fireside Chat on Union Budget 2023

Date & Time : 04 February 2023 (Saturday), Navi Mumbai

The Department of Management Studies (DMS) (Off Campus), Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Navi Mumbai had organised a Fireside Chat on Union Budget 2023 on 4 February 2023, Saturday at the Seminar Hall of its Belpada (Kharghar) campus. The event was powered by Finance Club, DMS. The event was a panel discussion on this year’s budgetwhich was unveiled on 01 February 2023, Wednesday, by Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, honourable Finance Minister of India. The panel featured two illustrious personalities- Mr. Rommel Rodrigues, Financial Journalist and Author, Film Director, Screenwriter and Producer and Editor- Express Post and Mr. Shrikant Koundinya, Assistant Vice President- Training and Education, Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. This post-budget analysis was attended by various faculty members of the institute and students of classes- BBA, MBA 1st year and MBA 2nd year.

The event began at around 2 PM. The guest speakers were introduced to the audience by Ms. Shreya Bose, Student, MBA 1st year. This was followed by the felicitation of guests by Dr.Premasish Roy, Director, DMS, Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University), Navi Mumbai. He addressed the audience and warmly welcomed the guests to begin the Fireside Chat. The panellists began their discussion with talking about some important highlights of the budget 2023-2024 and gave their personal observations of the same. To keep it interactive, the guests encouraged the audience to share their ideas and questions to further the ongoing discussion. The topics discussed included green growth, India’s role towards following a sustainable path of development, distinguishing the real environmental threats from the false ones intended to divert or decelerate the pace of certain developmental initiatives, the relevance of the current policies related to food security, investment in infrastructural development and certain shortcomings of this year’s budget, like a relatively lower focus on aiding the growth of India’s tourism sector. However, the speakers agreed that the very gesture of the budget to even propose diverse initiatives and better fund allocation to various sectors of the economy can be seen as the first strong step towards climbing up the ladder of development. Even the faculty members participated in the discussion and made the entire analysis even richer with their insights. After this speaker-audience interaction, Ms. Shreya Bose delivered the vote of thanks for the event, which was followed by the singing of the National Anthem and a group photo session. The event concluded by around 3:30 PM.

The program was indeed a very rich experience for each and every attendee. Such sessions which are less of a one-way talk and more of a conversation and discussion add great value to the learning of a student, a faculty member and even the speaker(s) on the panel. Moreover, while a budget of a nation may be one of the most important and relevant documents for its citizens, comprehending its various aspects and components may not always be easy. Hence, such discussions stemming from the lens of experts may prove to be instrumental in eradicating the blockades that interrupt the smooth flow of interpretation in a person. To be able to achieve this understanding and translating that understanding to knowledge, is imperative for the managers of tomorrow as it not only makes them informed about the world but also makes them prepared to face the same.
