Prof. Dr. Shamita Kumar Presents India's Perspective on Geospatial Capacity Building at the 5th BRICS Working Group Meeting

Prof. Dr. Shamita Kumar, Principal, Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environment Education and Research (BVIEER), Pune, was invited to present the input session titled “The Missing Foundation of the Geospatial Paradigm: The Role of Capacity Building" during the 5th BRICS Working Group Meeting on Geospatial Technologies and their Applications held at IIT Tirupati. Presenting India's perspective on geospatial capacity building, she emphasized that the success of the geospatial ecosystem depends not only on technology and data but also on developing skilled people and institutions. She introduced India's Geospatial Capacity Building Framework, which aligns with the UN Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF). The framework focuses on four key pillars—Awareness, Education, Professional Training, and Entrepreneurship—to create a geospatially empowered society and support the implementation of the National Geospatial Policy 2022. The presentation showcased India's commitment to building geospatial competencies through education, innovation, and collaborative partnerships and was well received by delegates from the BRICS member countries.
