Workshop on Spatial Thinking for SDGs: A Pedagogical Approach organised at Washim

As part of the Geospatial Capacity Building Program coordinated by BVIEER with the support from National Geospatial Programme (NGP) of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, the fifth regional workshop on Spatial Thinking for Localising the SDGs was held at DIET Washim on 2–3 July 2025. The training introduced 57 teachers to spatial thinking as a pedagogical approach—emphasizing inquiry, data-driven reasoning, and place-based problem solving. By integrating tools like QGIS, QField, StoryMaps, and EpiCollect5 into classroom practice, the workshop demonstrated how spatial thinking can enrich subjects such as science, geography, history , and environmental education.

This pedagogy aligns strongly with the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which calls for geospatial capacity building at all levels, and with the National Education Policy 2020, which promotes competency-based, experiential, and interdisciplinary learning. By empowering teachers to guide students in mapping biodiversity, monitoring land use change, and engaging with local challenges, the workshop bridges the classroom with the community—supporting India’s sustainable development agenda while nurturing future-ready learners.
