ICMR – UNNATI Upgrading Norms for Growth and DevelopmeNt AssessmenT of Indian Children

Overview Image

Need for India-Specific Growth Charts

Childhood growth, particularly growth during the first two years of life, has important implications for the short term and long-term health outcomes, work productivity, and cognitive capacity of individuals and society at large.

There is an urgent need for updated, India-specific growth charts, as early childhood growth—especially in the first two years—has lasting effects on health, cognition, and productivity.

Given India’s distinct "thin-fat" phenotype and regional growth variations, a nationally representative Indian Growth Reference Study is essential for accurate growth assessment and informed health policies.

Aims and Objectives

Primary Objective

To develop growth standards for Indian children, aged 0-24 months, having no major biological, socio-behavioral or economic constraints to growth and development.

Secondary Objectives

  • To develop normative neurodevelopmental charts for Indian children 0-24 months of age.
  • To develop growth curves for term Small for Gestational Age (SGA) babies from 0-24 months of age.

Expected Outcomes:

  • National Growth Reference Charts for Indian Children (0–2 years)
  • Body Composition Reference Charts
  • Growth Velocity Charts for Specific Age Groups

These outcomes aim to support evidence-based growth monitoring and nutritional assessment across healthcare and research settings in India.
