Campus Bird Count Highlights Urban Biodiversity at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Katraj Campus, Pune
As part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), conducted annually across the world, students across institutes at Bharati Vidyapeeth Katraj Campus , Pune participated in a four-day Campus Bird Count, documenting an impressive 51 bird species, including 7 first-time records for the campus
The activity led by the MSc students of Institute of Environment Education and Research, Pune introduced many students to birding and citizen science, encouraging them to observe and document biodiversity within their own surroundings. Notable sightings included migratory species such as the Rosy Starling and the Ashy Drongo, highlighting the campus’s role as an important urban green space supporting biodiversity.
The initiative not only strengthened awareness about local ecosystems but also demonstrated how campuses can contribute to larger global biodiversity monitoring efforts through citizen participation
